Second Law of Thermodynamics


The second law of thermodynamics, also commonly known as the Law of Increased Entropy, states that while quantity remains the same (first law of thermodynamics), the quality of the matter/energy slowly deteriorates over time. Entropy is defined as a measure of usable energy within a closed or isolated system.  It can also be considered as a gauge of randomness in a closed system; as usable energy is lost, randomness, disorganization and chaos increases. In other words, an increase in entropy means the reduction of energy available to do work in the future. Every event in the natural world will result in an increase in entropy. Unavailable energy is often in the form of thermal energy and is the result of disorderly and random motions of large numbers of individual molecules and atoms.
This law is so important because it is one that cannot be defied or violated and any physical phenomenon will not be able to survive without this law. Some examples of increased entropy are rusting, aging, and rotting.
